5 To Dos This Spring Around Your Home

Spring is blossoming in Metro Vancouver with our cherry blossom trees lining our roads in shades of pink and white. We shake off the winter by doing a bit of spring cleaning/tidying.

Here are a list of 5 tasks that you may wish to do around your home this season.

1) Turn and exercise the water supply valves under your sinks and toilets to prevent them from sticking when you need to use them.

2) Make sure toilets flush properly. If the handle must be held down for a thorough flush or jiggled to stop the water from running you may need to replace worn tank parts. They are inexpensive to change and you’ll notice a lower water bill as water will no longer be running.

3) Clean mineral deposits from your shower heads. Unscrew the shower head and soak in vinegar or fill a plastic bag with vinegar; place it over the shower head and hold in place with a rubber band. Soak the shower head overnight for a thorough clean then remove and gently scrub with an old toothbrush to remove the deposits.

4) Pour a couple of litres of water into infrequently used drains (including floor drains) to fill the trap and prevent odours from entering your house. Slow floor drains should be snaked to ensure they will carry away water quickly in the event of a flood.

5) Consider installing flood alarms/sensors. Like a smoke alarm, a flood alarm is a battery-operated device that sounds an alarm when it comes in contact with water. It alerts you to potential flooding or leaks. You can install a water shutoff valve that will cut the water supply if the sensor is in contact with water and Ashton Service Group can also install earthquake shutoff valves to turn off the gas to your appliances.

Please feel free to contact us at 604-283-2383 if you are interested in installing flood sensors or water/gas shutoff valves in your home to provide you with piece of mind while you are off enjoying your spring break vacation.
