About 25% of Canadian suffer from seasonal allergies also known as  hay fever, so yourself or someone you know or work with may have them. Allergies have a strong genetic component — if your parents had allergies, unfortunately you are more likely to have them too.

The most common allergy triggers are:

  • Tree, grass, and weed pollen
  • Mold spores
  • Dust mite and cockroach allergens
  • Cat, dog, and rodent dander

In spring and summer, people are vulnerable to tree pollen, ragweed or grass allergies, but dust mites, pets and moulds are also common in warmer months. Tree pollen allergies are very common, and can start anywhere from January to April depending on the city you live in.

To minimize the allergens in your house, get a high-efficiency furnace filter (look for MERV level 11 or 12), and be sure to change it every spring and again in early summer. You can also cut down on allergens by using a HEPA filter on your vacuum. There are also portable air purifiers that you can have in your home to filter the air and reduce the number of particles and pollen that cause the itchy eyes and runny noses.

If you are interested, there are also whole home air purifier systems that can be retrofitted into your home’s existing heating or air conditioning system. It will silently clean all of the air in your home up to 125 times per day.
