Asbestos In Your Home
What’s Asbestos and Why You Should Care
Asbestos is a fire-resistance mineral fiber that can be dangerous to your health. In the past, it was a popular material used to guard against heat and noise in buildings due to its insulating properties. Plaster is often added to asbestos to give it structural strength. The prolonged inhalation of asbestos can have serious consequences on your health including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
Why was Asbestos Used?
Up until the 1980’s, asbestos was commonly used in house construction. If the asbestos is in good condition and intact, it poses no health dangers to inhabitants. These materials become hazardous when it deteriorates or is disturbed. This can happen when it is handled, sanded, drilled or when it starts to crumble. To avoid this situation, always find out where asbestos in your home is located before you start any renovations.
