Canada Day Events: Vancouver & Burnaby/New West

Canada’s 149th birthday is only a couple of days away. Most people will have this federal statutory holiday off to spend with their friends and family celebrating our country’s birthday. There are many great events happening all over Metro Vancouver and below are a few that you may want to check out.

Canada Day at Canada Place

This very popular event is the biggest Canada Day celebration outside of Ottawa! It is a full day of festivities (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) that highlights include musical performances, a citizenship ceremony, multicultural talent performances, an Expo ’86 pavilion, street hockey, the 8th Annual evening Canada Day parade (7:00 p.m. start), and so much more. There will be a fireworks show that will take place at 10:30 p.m. at the Burrard Inlet with two simultaneous barges full of fireworks that will be set off. The two fireworks barges are located in Coal Harbour and Dundarave in West Vancouver.

Canada Day on Granville Island

A family-friendly celebration will take place all day at Granville Island on Canada Day. The street will be transformed into a sea of red and white. It is a good day when you can colour-coordinate in public spaces. Enjoy festivities that range from a parade and an official Canada Day ceremony to TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival concerts and street performances. Lots of special Canada Day treats will be for sale including a Lobster Man cookout at The Lobster Man and a special donut at Lee’s Donuts.

Canada Day Run and Celebration

Come run the beautiful trails of Pacific Spirit Park by UBC at this 5th Annual  10K, 5K and 1K Kids Run and Seniors Walk. After the run enjoy a hot dog barbecue and cake at Wesbrook Village. An early start to your Canada Day festivities with  an 9:30 a.m. start that goes until 2 p.m. There will be a Kids zone, singing of the national anthem and an awards/prizes ceremony. Note there is a registration fee to take part in the run.

Canada Day at the Vancouver Maritime Museum

There is free admission from 10am-5pm. Enjoy stories from the Canadian Arctic with Inuit storyteller and children’s author Michael Kusugak, crafts for children, and an opportunity to explore the historic RCMP Vessel St. Roch and the temporary exhibit, Across the Top of the World: the Quest for the Northwest Passage.

Canada Day Concert and Fireworks at Swanguard Stadium

The City of Burnaby hosts a free Canada Day concert with Canadian rockers The Trews, country/pop singer Madeline Merlo along with Vancouver reggae band Purple Soul at Swangard Stadium. Gates open at 5 p.m., concert at 6:30pm ending with fireworks at dusk.

Canada Day at Burnaby Village Museum

Burnaby’s official Canada Day celebrations offers visitors the backdrop of a 1920s village with plenty of multi-cultural family entertainment including musicians, displays and demonstrations. Free admission for the entire family from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Carousel rides are $2.60.

Canada Day Celebration at Edmonds Plaza & Park

A fun day of free family activities including: face painting, music, arts and crafts, bingo, cake, multicultural entertainment from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Edmonds Park (located behind the Edmonds Community Centre).

Canada Day in Queen’s Park

A day of free, fun and celebrations for the entire family at Queen’s Park Bandshell from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Features entertainment, interactive community display booths, cupcakes, arts and crafts, face painting and the celebrated ‘Pick-a-Box’ silent auction. There will be fireworks by the waterfront at 10pm.

 

There is going to be so much to do and not enough time. Pick and choose the ones you must have to get to.
