Springtime in Metro Vancouver

Spring is here and after the Easter holidays and chocolate bunnies consumed it is time to do some tidying up. To prepare for the spring and warmer weather here are some household items you may have overlooked:

1.  Cleaning/maintaining your air conditioner.

Most air conditioners have a drainage hole on the base of the cabinet. This hole needs to be kept clear in order for the air conditioner to work properly. It’s a good idea each spring to use a paper clip or wire to poke through the hole and clear it. Make sure that your AC unit is level and that it has not shifted.

2. Cleaning your dehumidifier.

To keep your dehumidifier working properly, remove its housing and let the unit dry completely. Vacuum every accessible surface and crevice to remove are dust particles that have gotten trapped.

3. Cleaning your bathroom fans.

Safety first-be sure the power is off when you do this! Clean your bathroom fans once a year. Take the cover off, wash it in soapy water and clean dirt off the fan blades with a toothbrush.

4. Toilets.

Check the flappers on your toilets at least once a year. If they are showing their age, replace them before they start leaking and wasting water.

5. Thermostat.

Check that your programmable thermostat is set for the cooling season ahead. The key is to set the thermostat to adjust to times and temperatures that fit your family’s needs. You can set the thermostat a little higher for when there is no one home.
